A Step-by-Step Guide to Installing a Roof Lantern

A roof lantern is a stylish and practical addition to any home, flooding your space with natural light while adding an architectural focal point. Installing one may seem complex, but with the right tools and guidance, it’s entirely manageable. Follow our step-by-step guide to ensure a smooth and successful installation.

Tools and Materials Required

  • Cordless screwdriver
  • Soft mallet
  • Wire cutters
  • Sealant
  • 5mm Hex bit (supplied with kit)

Step 1: Assemble the Eaves Beam

Slide the eaves beam sections together using the corner brackets. Temporarily secure the corners with tie-wraps, ensuring a tight fit.

Step 2: Apply Sealant

Apply sealant only in the areas indicated in the instructions. Avoid applying sealant to the gap between the upstand and the eaves beam, as this could block drainage.

Step 3: Assemble the Spider Boss

Secure the hips to the central boss using 70mm bolts. Attach the rafters using 60mm bolts, ensuring you use the correct tapered washers.

Step 4: Fixing the Jack Rafters (If Applicable)

Jack rafters are optional but provide additional structural support. Secure them using 60mm bolts, ensuring proper spacing.

Step 5: Secure the Structure

Loosely fit all 20mm bolts before fully tightening them. Remove any temporary tie-wraps after final adjustments.

Step 6: Fastening the Roof Lantern to the Upstand

Position the assembled structure over the pre-drilled holes on the upstand. Use packers under the eaves beam for extra support.

Step 7: Installing the Glass Panels

Slide the glass into the glass retainers, maintaining a 15mm spacing. Rotate each panel into position.

Step 8: Attaching the Caps and End Caps

Secure the hip and rafter lower end caps with a soft mallet. Attach ridge, hip, and rafter top caps by clipping them into position.

Final Checks

  • Ensure all bolts and screws are fully tightened.
  • Double-check the sealant application to prevent leaks.
  • Inspect the structure for any misalignments.

Conclusion

By following these steps, you can confidently install your roof lantern, adding both style and function to your home. If in doubt, always consult a professional to ensure proper installation. Enjoy the enhanced light and aesthetic appeal that your new roof lantern brings!
